We had our first group meeting of 2018 the other day, and it was so lovely to see so many of you there! It was great to catch up with you all to welcome along some new members!
We let everyone know that we will no longer be doing paper versions of the newsletters, but instead everything will be done digitally from now on, being more environmentally friendly. All the info that was in the newsletters is on the website and I also post about upcoming events and important info on our social media as well so everyone is able to keep up to date. For members who don’t have access to a computer I always give out the dates and times of our next events at the group meetings and they are able to keep a note of them so they are up to date as well.
I was also excited to announce that we have someone running the Great North Run for our support group again this year! Stew is the husband of one of our lovely committee members and wants to raise awareness and give back to the support group that Ali finds so helpful. Stew has lost nearly 5 stone and is in training for the GNR, having also signed up for a 10k race before the big event! I will be setting up a crowdfunding page for Stew asap and I’ll let you know the details of it as soon as I can. It would be fantastic if you could share the crowdfunding page with friends and family through social media or in person, all those £1’s add up and it will help us so much! We’re so grateful to Stew and all his hard work and efforts, he has been an amazing support and we all wish him well in his training!
We also had a visit from Helen Storey RGN who practices the M-Technique.
The ‘M’ Technique is a method of gentle, structured touch allowing you to deeply relax and to quickly allow the mind to unwind and let go of any inner turmoil. The results are very different from massage; it is more akin to a meditative type state.
Helen qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1992 after training at the Freeman Hospital. She then went on to midwifery training but left to pursue a career caring for the elderly. Helen trained in the M-Technique after her husband, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour, was referred for this therapy and she saw the relaxing and calming effects it had on him. After his allotted sessions finished through the Hospice they were unable to access this therapy privately as no one in the region was offering this treatment. Helen was so lovely, and understands the challenges we face while living with Fibromyalgia. If you would like to find out more information about the M-Technique that Helen offers please visit her website here: Helen Storey – M Technique website
We will keep in contact with Helen, and invite her back to be a guest speaker later in the year.
She also left us a testimonial saying:
Hello everyone, I attended the meeting today as a visitor. I would just like to say how lovely everyone has been and how welcome I have been made to feel. I would definitely recommend anyone dealing with Fibromyalgia to attend this group for friendly support.
Helen Storey, RGN.
